Northern hails success of chemical-free cleaning initiative

Northern has celebrated the one-year anniversary of its decision to adopt a chemical-free cleaning regime, highlighting significant benefits in terms of sustainability, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

In November 2023, the train operator introduced Clean Zero, an innovative cleaning solution that leverages advanced water filtration technology to achieve high-quality cleaning standards without the use of harsh chemicals.

By implementing Clean Zero across its network, Northern has achieved the following:

  • Reduced Plastic Waste: The company has eliminated the need for 9,000 single-use plastic bottles.
  • Enhanced Safety: The removal of 14 hazardous chemicals from the cleaning process has significantly improved workplace safety.
  • Significant Cost Savings: The switch to Clean Zero has resulted in substantial cost reductions in cleaning product expenditure.

Richard Holt, head of train presentation at Northern, said: “We’re really pleased with the results we’ve seen in the first year since switching to Clean Zero – not just in terms of the standard of cleanliness on our trains, but also the reduction in waste, the removal of chemicals from the cleaning process and the cost savings. All in all – a clean sweep all round.”

Northern’s commitment to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency is evident in its adoption of Clean Zero. The company’s proactive approach to sustainable practices sets a positive example for the rail industry.
