RSSB introduces AI-Powered tool to optimise wheelset maintenance

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered tool designed to enhance the management of rail freight wagon wheelset condition. This innovative solution aims to reduce costly damage to the railway network and minimise disruptions to train services.

Approximately 100 freight trains are withdrawn from service annually due to urgent wagon maintenance, often necessitated by poor wheelset condition. Such issues can lead to increased track wear, costly repairs, and potential safety risks.

RSSB’s new Wheelset Intervention Support Tool leverages advanced predictive analytics to monitor wheelset degradation, utilising data from wheel impact load detectors and other relevant sources. By identifying potential issues early on, the tool enables proactive maintenance interventions, optimizing operational efficiency and reducing costs.

Key benefits of the tool include:

  • Improved Operational Efficiency: Optimized maintenance schedules minimize downtime and enhance service reliability.
  • Cost Savings: Proactive maintenance reduces the overall lifecycle cost of wheelsets and avoids costly emergency repairs.
  • Enhanced Safety: Early detection of potential wheelset failures prevents damage to infrastructure and mitigates associated safety risks.

RSSB is currently conducting a pilot program with select rail freight operators to gather valuable feedback and refine the tool’s capabilities. A full-scale release is planned for the following year.
