Rail Industry Connected | Hydrogen Trams as a Service with Jim Harkins, Light Rail (UK)

Making our railway systems more sustainable has been a hot topic for many years now. While already a relatively sustainable method of transport, with innovation there are opportunities to move people in an even more environmentally friendly way than ever before.

Within cities, tram systems across Europe are becoming more prevalent. While we have a few systems in the UK, Manchester Metrolink and Nexus being two well documented examples, with large urban areas experiencing significant growth, there are opportunities for more.

Within the tram sector, the use of hydrogen is sustainable solution, which is already being tested and implemented worldwide, in countries such as South Korea and China. Visitors to InnoTrans in September will have seen an example of the Daejeon hydrogen tram on show thanks to Hyundai Rotem.

Today, we speak to Jim Harkins who is Technical Advisor to the All Party Light Rail Group and Managing Director of Light Rail (UK), aiming to bring hydrogen trams to the UK and introduce more light rail systems as a whole. As a sustainable and innovative approach to implementing tram systems in the country, significant opportunities, including funding and business support, are available for businesses of all sizes to demonstrate how their innovative solutions could contribute to the future of tram systems as we know it.
