Greater Manchester Transport boss to continue as Chair of Urban Transport Group

Steve Warrener, Managing Director of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), has been reappointed as Chair of the Urban Transport Group (UTG) for another year.

The extension to his two-year term was approved by the UTG Board and comes at a crucial time for city regions as many members transition towards becoming Integrated Settlements.

Warrener brings extensive experience to the role, having led TfGM since 2007. He oversees the organisation’s day-to-day operations, managing an annual budget of approximately £1 billion.

During his tenure at TfGM, Warrener has overseen the launch and implementation of the Bee Network, a significant achievement for the region. He has also played a key role in delivering major transport infrastructure projects, including Metrolink extensions, Stockport Interchange, and the Leigh Guided Busway. Furthermore, TfGM has invested heavily in active travel, creating over 120km of new walking, cycling, and wheeling routes.

Warrener assumed the role of UTG Chair in February 2023.

Steve Warrener said: “With further devolutionary powers and greater fiscal responsibility, city region transport authorities have an even bigger role to play in ensuring that transport services truly deliver for their communities. But authorities continue to face similar challenges around funding, climate change and skills, to name just a few. The Urban Transport Group’s network of transport authorities is therefore more important than ever in collectively responding to and finding the solutions to these issues.

“I’m delighted to be able to continue the important work of the UTG Board and thank my fellow Board members for asking me to stay on in the role for another year.”

The Urban Transport Group’s Board is made up of seven Directors – one from each of its full members.
