AI-Powered ‘Safe Insights’ launches to revolutionise UK Rail Safety Data

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has launched “Safe Insights,” a cutting-edge, AI-powered safety reporting system, marking a significant leap forward in the analysis of rail safety data in the UK.

Replacing the long-standing Safety Management Intelligence System (SMIS), which has served the industry for 25 years, Safe Insights promises a more user-friendly, efficient, and technologically advanced platform.

Chris Knowles, Director of System Safety and Health at RSSB, explained, “Launching in March 2025, Safe Insights promises to streamline data input, enhance analysis, and accelerate safety improvements across Britain’s railways. For over two decades, SMIS has been the cornerstone of safety incident reporting, driving significant advancements in rail safety and efficiency. Building on that heritage RSSB has developed Safe Insights – the successor to SMIS. It’s an integrated system designed to elevate safety data management to new heights.”

Safe Insights is designed to be more than just a database. It’s a comprehensive system that empowers RSSB members to efficiently collect, store, and analyse critical safety data. The integration of AI simplifies data input, enhances accuracy, and saves valuable time. The system’s advanced reporting capabilities will enable faster and more effective insights, connecting frontline experiences with vital research, standards, and operational improvements.

Key features of Safe Insights include:

  • AI-Enhanced Input: Streamlines data collection, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Advanced Analytics Capabilities: Facilitates faster data sharing, understanding, and learning.
  • Integrated System: Allows for seamless data collection, storage, and analysis.
  • Expansion Beyond Safety: Sets the stage for integrating health, wellbeing, and sustainability data.

Safe Insights represents the first of a suite of tools designed to extend the benefits of data-driven insights beyond safety, encompassing health, wellbeing, and sustainability. RSSB aims to empower the rail industry to continuously learn, adapt, and improve, ensuring a safer and smarter rail network for the UK.

The RSSB has also released a video showcasing Safe Insights in action, featuring Anthony Willett from Freightliner Group, demonstrating how the system is transforming rail safety. This new system promises to be a powerful tool for the rail industry, enabling proactive safety improvements and driving efficiency.
