The Prime Minister has today announced a significant £415 million injection of funding into the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), bolstering the multi-billion-pound project aimed at revolutionising rail travel across the North of England.
This latest investment will drive further progress on the ambitious programme, which promises to deliver faster, more frequent, and environmentally sustainable rail services connecting key Northern cities including Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York.
Beyond the immediate improvements to transport infrastructure, the TRU is projected to deliver substantial social and economic benefits to the region. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, hundreds of apprenticeships, and provide significant opportunities for local businesses within the supply chain. Furthermore, the shift towards electrified rail travel is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by up to 87,000 tonnes annually, contributing to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

This funding supports our onward journey to be truly transformational, delivering faster, more reliable rail services that connect people to jobs, education, and leisure opportunities.
“By improving connectivity and increasing capacity, we are not only enhancing journeys for customers but also helping to drive up investment supporting more housing and more jobs and boosting productivity across the region.”
The TRU programme is set to deliver:
- Increased Frequency: Up to six fast trains per hour between Leeds and Manchester, alongside improved local stopping services.
- Reduced Journey Times: Manchester to York in as little as 63 minutes, and Manchester to Leeds in 41 minutes.
- Electrification: Full route electrification, reducing reliance on diesel and supporting Net Zero targets.
- Station Enhancements: Upgrades at key stations to improve passenger experience and accessibility.
- Increased Freight Capacity: Enabling up to 15 additional freight trains per day, reducing road congestion.
This latest funding announcement brings the total approved investment for the TRU to £7.3 billion, moving the project closer to its goal of delivering a modern, high-performing railway that better connects communities across the North.
The government maintains that the Transpennine Route Upgrade, through enhanced capacity, reliability, and sustainability, will not only improve journeys for passengers but also strengthen the region’s long-term economic prospects. As work continues, the project is expected to play a crucial role in unlocking new opportunities, supporting local businesses, and creating a more prosperous and better-connected North for future generations.
