Northern leaders have reaffirmed their ambitious vision for the transport infrastructure crucial to unlocking economic growth across the region. Their united call for increased investment follows a recent Transport for the North (TfN) board meeting held in Liverpool, which brought together Mayors and council leaders from across the North.
Ahead of the Government’s anticipated infrastructure pipeline announcement later this month, the leaders underscored the urgent need for significant investment in the North’s strategic rail network. Evidence compiled by TfN suggests that by bringing the region’s major towns and cities closer together through enhanced connectivity, the potential for economic growth is immense. The compelling case for change is clear, with a recent IPPR study once again highlighting the historical underinvestment that has constrained the North for decades. With the right level of investment, it is projected that the North could boost the UK economy by a remarkable £118 billion.
Northern leaders are also adamant that a comprehensive plan, complete with clear timelines, is now required for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR).
Responding to the recent Spending Review and 10-year infrastructure strategy, the meeting welcomed the transformational investment committed to city regions. However, leaders simultaneously called for further, far-reaching investment across the entire North, including its vital rural and coastal areas. They reiterated the imperative for NPR to be delivered in full, encompassing new lines via central Warrington, Manchester Airport, and Bradford, substantial upgrades to routes connecting Sheffield, Leeds, and Hull, and improvements to the East Coast Main Line, notably including the reopening of the Leamside Line.
Lord McLoughlin, Chair of Transport for the North, stated: “The North’s political leaders know that better connectivity can unlock sustainable and inclusive growth. While welcoming the commitments in the recent Spending Review, we also need to see Northern Powerhouse Rail become a reality for our communities and businesses and now is the time for a clear plan to make it happen.”
He continued: “We need to be able to give our industries and our young people the certainty to look ahead and see transformational infrastructure happening to help build a better future for the North. We want to see decisions made by the North, for the North, in the North.”
The meeting also received an encouraging update on the progress of the TransPennine Rail Upgrade, with electrification between Manchester and Leeds reported to be well underway. Political leaders expressed their excitement at seeing the work being delivered and its engagement with communities along the route, signalling tangible progress on vital regional projects.
