Northern Rail Hits Post-Pandemic Record with Over 8 Million Journeys in a Month

Northern, one of the UK’s largest train operators, has recorded its busiest four-week period since before the pandemic, with more than 8.1 million journeys made across its network between 14 September and 11 October 2025.

The major milestone signifies a strong return to rail travel across the North of England, despite a weekend of severe weather disruption.


Demand Soars Across the North

The figure of 8.1 million journeys marks an 8.3% increase compared to the same period last year, and is the highest number of customer journeys recorded in a four-week window since February 2020.

Driving the surge in demand was Northern’s recent Flash Sale, which proved hugely popular. Customers snapped up a record 150,000 advance tickets, with fares starting from just £2.

The operator achieved the post-pandemic record for customer journeys even with the disruption caused by Storm Amy over the weekend of 4 October, reflecting what the company believes is continued confidence in the region’s rail network.


Commitment to Performance Improvement

While celebrating the boost in passenger numbers, Northern—which runs 2,650 services a day to over 500 stations—reiterated its commitment to improving its overall operational performance.

The company is currently working towards ambitious targets to enhance reliability, aiming for no more than 2% of services to be cancelled and for 90% of trains to arrive within three minutes of schedule.
