Network Rail has unveiled the next stage of a major programme of essential upgrades to the West Coast Main Line, the backbone railway connecting London, the Midlands, the North West and Scotland.
The plans mark the first comprehensive overhaul of Britain’s busiest mixed-use railway in more than 50 years. Carrying almost 2,000 passenger services and around 15,000 tonnes of freight every day, the route is operating at the limits of infrastructure largely designed for a different era. With passenger demand forecast to double by 2050, the investment is aimed at ensuring the railway can meet future needs.
Over the coming years, Network Rail will deliver hundreds of renewals and upgrades as part of a £400m programme, including:
- Renewal of overhead line equipment, track and signalling between Warrington and the Scottish border
- Track renewals on the approaches to Manchester Piccadilly
- Overhead line equipment renewals through Birmingham New Street
- Track and overhead line equipment renewals between Milton Keynes and London Euston
The work forms the early stages of a long-term plan to improve reliability and resilience along this critical corridor. While benefits will be delivered progressively, the programme is designed to support fewer delays, smoother journeys and stronger connections between towns, cities and communities.
It will also help the railway adapt to extreme weather and climate change, enable more freight to move by rail rather than road, and support jobs and investment across the regions the route serves.

The announcement follows the successful delivery of major West Coast Main Line upgrades over the Christmas period, including the Clifton bridge renewal, which reopened the M6 half a day earlier than planned and maintained rail connectivity via the Settle to Carlisle line.
