AtkinsRéalis secures major contracts to upgrade and digitise UK Rail Signalling

AtkinsRéalis Group Inc., a leading engineering services and nuclear company, has been awarded significant contracts by Network Rail to upgrade and digitise the country’s rail signalling systems over the next decade.

This landmark framework, valued at £4 billion, represents a major step forward in modernising the UK’s rail infrastructure. Network Rail’s Train Control Systems Framework is a ten-year initiative aimed at transforming signalling across its vast 20,000-mile network.

Dual Expertise Positions AtkinsRéalis for Success

AtkinsRéalis’ success reflects their deep expertise in both conventional and digital signalling technologies. They secured two of the eight framework contracts, demonstrating their versatility and ability to contribute to a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable future for Britain’s railway network.

One contract sees AtkinsRéalis working independently to deliver conventional signalling upgrades. For digital signalling projects, they have formed a strategic partnership with CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A.) under the newly established joint venture, CARDS (CAF AtkinsRéalis Digital Signalling). This collaboration leverages AtkinsRéalis’ experience with European Train Control System (ETCS) technology and their proven ability to foster supply chain collaboration – both critical factors for complex digital signalling projects like the TransPennine Route Upgrade.

“This landmark framework represents a significant step forward in modernizing the UK’s rail infrastructure,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer, AtkinsRéalis. “Our expertise in both conventional and digital signalling positions us well to contribute to increased reliability and efficiency across Britain’s railway network, supporting the industry’s transformation towards a more sustainable and high-performing future.”

“This framework appointment demonstrates the strong momentum of our rail business and cements our position as a market leader of high-quality signalling services in the UK,” said Richard Robinson, President, United Kingdom and Ireland, AtkinsRéalis. “We are known for our expertise in European Train Control System technology and ability to create a collaborative environment across the supply chain, which are both crucial for delivering complex projects such as digital signalling for the TransPennine Route Upgrade.”

Building on a Strong Track Record

AtkinsRéalis brings a wealth of experience to this project, having successfully delivered numerous UK rail and signalling projects. These include the ongoing re-signalling scheme south-east of London and their role as Railway Systems Integration Partner for the East Coast Digital Programme – the UK’s first intercity digital railway.

This significant framework award underscores AtkinsRéalis’ commitment to driving innovation and efficiency within the UK’s railway industry, paving the way for a safer, more reliable, and sustainable future for passengers and freight.
