CIRO welcomes new CEO, Philip Sherratt

The Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO), a leading professional body for railway operators, is delighted to announce the appointment of Philip Sherratt as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Philip brings a wealth of experience in the rail industry, having held senior positions at various organisations, including his recent role as Editor of Modern Railways. His deep understanding of the sector and his passion for railway operations make him an ideal choice to lead CIRO.

As CEO, Philip will be responsible for driving CIRO’s strategic direction and ensuring the organisation continues to support the professional development of railway operators. He will focus on enhancing CIRO’s training programs, expanding its membership base, and strengthening its partnerships with key stakeholders within the industry.

Philip’s vision for CIRO centres around expansion, inclusivity, and innovation. As he expressed upon his appointment. He said: “CIRO plays a crucial role in developing the skills and professionalism of railway operators – the very people who ensure that passengers and freight can move efficiently across the country. Building on the strong foundations already in place, I am honoured to be taking the helm of such an important organisation at this pivotal time.

“The UK railway system is going through significant change, and I see CIRO as having an even greater role in the future. I look forward to growing the Institution’s influence and ensuring that our services are at the heart of the reformed railway. It’s vital that we continue to support our members, enhance our training programmes, and provide the professional recognition that railway operators deserve.”

Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann and Chair of CIRO, shared his excitement about Philip’s appointment: “I am delighted to welcome Philip as our new CEO. His deep understanding of the rail industry, combined with his proven leadership, made him the standout candidate in what was a rigorous selection process. We are confident that he is the right leader to drive CIRO forward as we continue to champion and grow operational capability.”
