Expleo and RailX form strategic partnership to accelerate digital rail freight across Europe

Expleo has announced a strategic partnership with RailX that aims to place both organisations at the forefront of digital transformation in Europe’s inland freight sector.

The collaboration brings together RailX’s digital freight logistics platform with Expleo’s engineering expertise across rail systems, operations and next-generation technologies. Together, the partners will develop connected inland freight solutions designed to improve rail freight efficiency, ease congestion at ports and support better decision-making for both shippers and operators.

At the heart of the partnership is a shared ambition to modernise how freight moves across the continent. By combining engineering capability with real-time digital logistics tools, the initiative is expected to reduce operational costs, improve network resilience and accelerate progress towards lower-carbon freight transport.

Rob Hirst, Technical Director for Rail at Expleo, said the partnership represents a significant opportunity for the sector.

“Expleo is proud to partner with RailX and to work together to unlock the benefits of rail freight digitalisation for our clients,” he said. “This collaboration supports industry CO₂ reduction targets while also delivering better cost control and operational efficiency.”

RailX’s platform provides digital booking, dynamic pricing and AI-driven planning, alongside live multimodal tracking, exception management and seamless rail-to-road integration. When combined with Expleo’s delivery capability and systems expertise, the partners believe this will enable a step change in how inland freight is planned and managed.

Paul Bathgate, Chief Executive of RailX, said the partnership strengthens the case for data-led freight operations.

“By combining our proven freight logistics technology with Expleo’s scale and engineering expertise, we can drive real innovation in the sector,” he said. “Together, we will boost rail capacity, improve reliability and make data-driven inland transport a practical reality for shippers and operators across Europe.”

The partnership reflects growing momentum behind digital rail freight as the industry looks to improve performance, cut emissions and support more sustainable supply chains across the UK and Europe.
