GB Railfreight secures 11-year steel logistics contract with 7 Steel UK in Cardiff

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has secured a new long-term agreement with 7 Steel UK to transport raw materials and finished steel products to and from its Cardiff operations, strengthening rail freight’s role in supporting the UK’s steel manufacturing sector.

The agreement, which will run for at least 11 years, significantly expands an existing relationship between the two companies and will see GBRf take responsibility for moving scrap steel into Cardiff and distributing finished products to customers across the UK.

The contract also extends GBRf’s existing on-site shunting operations, creating an integrated logistics arrangement covering inbound materials, internal rail movements and outbound steel distribution.

Services are scheduled to commence in October 2026, with GBRf committing to investment in new and modified wagons to support the operation.

The agreement provides long-term certainty for both organisations and highlights the importance of rail freight in maintaining efficient supply chains for Britain’s manufacturing industries.

Integrated rail logistics for Cardiff steel operations

Under the expanded contract, GBRf will transport scrap steel into 7 Steel UK’s Cardiff facilities for use in steel production.

Finished products, including reinforcing bar (rebar) and coiled steel, will then be moved by rail to customers across the country.

By managing both inbound and outbound movements, GBRf will provide a coordinated logistics service designed to support the steelmaker’s production requirements and distribution network.

The arrangement builds on more than 15 years of collaboration between the two businesses, during which GBRf has provided rail services to support 7 Steel UK’s operations.

The new agreement extends this relationship beyond the existing contract, giving GBRf a wider role in managing the movement of materials throughout the steel supply chain.

For steel manufacturers, reliable freight connections are particularly important because production depends on a consistent supply of raw materials and the ability to distribute substantial volumes of finished products efficiently.

Rail is well suited to these requirements, particularly where heavy materials need to be transported between industrial sites and distribution locations over longer distances.

New wagon investment planned for 2027

As part of its commitment to the contract, GBRf will introduce two new sets of purpose-built scrap wagons during 2027.

The investment is intended to modernise the fleet serving Cardiff and improve the efficiency of inbound scrap steel movements.

GBRf will also provide an additional set of specially modified wagons capable of transporting 7 Steel UK’s finished products, including rebar and coiled steel.

The introduction of dedicated rolling stock reflects the different handling and transport requirements associated with raw materials and finished steel.

Scrap steel requires suitable wagons for bulk movement, while finished products must be transported securely to protect the material and ensure safe operations.

By investing in equipment specifically suited to the contract, GBRf aims to provide a reliable service while supporting the long-term requirements of the Cardiff facility.

The 11-year commitment also provides a basis for planning fleet investment, maintenance and operational resources over an extended period.

Long-term partnership supports UK manufacturing

Alex Kirk, Commercial Director at GB Railfreight, said: “This agreement is a significant milestone for GB Railfreight and we’re proud to be expanding our relationship with 7 Steel UK and supporting both the inbound movement of raw materials and the distribution of finished products across the country.

“The contract provides a strong foundation for future growth and demonstrates the important role rail freight continues to play in supporting UK industry. We’re looking forward to working closely with 7 Steel UK for many years to come and delivering the safe, reliable and efficient service our customer expects.”

The agreement strengthens GBRf’s position within the steel freight market, an important sector for rail operators because of the weight and volume of materials involved.

For 7 Steel UK, securing a long-term logistics partner provides greater continuity in the movement of scrap steel and finished products, helping the company plan its supply chain around established rail services.

Vorn O’Hennessy, Head of Supply Chain Management at 7 Steel UK, said: “This agreement strengthens our supply chain, supports more sustainable logistics and reflects our long-term commitment to steelmaking in Cardiff. We look forward to continuing our partnership with GB Railfreight to deliver reliable, efficient service for our customers across the UK.”

Rail freight’s role in decarbonising industrial supply chains

The agreement also reflects the growing importance of rail in reducing the environmental impact of industrial logistics.

Steel manufacturing involves the movement of substantial quantities of heavy materials, making transport efficiency a significant consideration for producers.

Using rail for bulk deliveries can reduce reliance on road haulage, helping to limit congestion, improve road safety and lower transport-related carbon emissions.

The expanded Cardiff operation will allow 7 Steel UK to use rail for both the supply of scrap steel and the distribution of finished products, rather than treating inbound and outbound logistics as separate activities.

This integrated approach could help improve the coordination of freight movements while supporting the manufacturer’s sustainability objectives.

The contract also provides GBRf with a platform for further development within the steel sector, where long-term industrial relationships can support investment in specialist rolling stock and freight operations.

Investment certainty for the rail freight sector

The duration of the agreement is particularly significant for a rail freight industry seeking to develop long-term customer relationships and justify investment in equipment and operational capability.

Contracts extending over more than a decade provide greater visibility of future demand, helping operators plan fleet requirements and allocate resources.

For GBRf, the commitment to new scrap wagons and modified steel-carrying vehicles demonstrates how long-term agreements can underpin investment in specialised rail freight assets.

For 7 Steel UK, the partnership secures an established rail logistics provider to support manufacturing and distribution from its Cardiff facilities.

The agreement also reinforces the role of rail freight in supporting domestic industrial production at a time when supply chain resilience, transport costs and environmental performance remain important considerations for UK manufacturers.

With services scheduled to begin under the expanded agreement in October and new rolling stock arriving during 2027, the contract marks a further development in the relationship between GBRf and 7 Steel UK.

It also demonstrates how integrated rail logistics, supported by dedicated rolling stock and long-term commercial commitments, can help maintain the competitiveness of UK steel manufacturing while generating sustained demand for rail freight services.
