Indra Group secures long-term contract to run TfL’s Oyster and contactless ticketing systems

Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Indra Group a new seven-year contract to operate its revenue collection system, with options to extend the agreement by up to a further five years.

Under the competitively tendered contract, Indra will take responsibility for the operation, maintenance, development and future expansion of TfL’s revenue collection services, including the Oyster and contactless ticketing systems, as well as management of TfL’s Oyster retail agent network.

The appointment comes as contactless and Oyster continue to dominate travel across the capital. More than 90 per cent of Tube and bus journeys are now made using these payment methods, with TfL’s contactless network set to expand further across the southeast during 2026. Over the past year alone, 30 stations gained pay-as-you-go contactless for the first time, with a further 20 due to go live next year.

Indra will also work with TfL to modernise the iconic Oyster system, first launched in 2003. Plans include moving Oyster towards an account-based ticketing model, aligning it more closely with contactless and giving customers greater flexibility and confidence that the best fare is applied. This could also open the door to future innovations, such as loading Oyster cards onto mobile devices.

“Millions of journeys are made on our public transport system every day, and it is vital that customers can trust the ticketing system to ensure they are charged the correct fare. We look forward to working with Indra Group on the next evolution of our Oyster and contactless ticketing system.”

Indra brings extensive global experience to the role, having delivered more than 2,500 mobility projects in over 100 cities worldwide. The company will work closely with TfL, the Greater London Authority, the Department for Transport and transport operators to support future enhancements and network expansion.

In the coming months, Indra will work alongside incumbent supplier Cubic Transportation Systems to ensure a smooth transition, with no impact on customers. A number of Cubic staff are expected to transfer to Indra as part of the handover.

Ángel Escribano, Executive Chairman of Indra Group, said the contract was a significant endorsement of the company’s capabilities, adding that London’s transport network remains a global benchmark for innovative and sustainable urban mobility.
