Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK has signed a new five-year framework agreement with AtkinsRéalis to supply its ElectroLogIXS signalling technology for deployment across the UK rail network, reinforcing a long-standing partnership focused on modernising railway infrastructure.
The agreement will see Knorr-Bremse provide its Network Rail-approved ElectroLogIXS platform, while AtkinsRéalis will deliver the associated design, integration, deployment and commissioning services required to implement complete signalling solutions.
The framework reflects growing demand for digital signalling technologies capable of improving railway safety, reliability and operational efficiency while supporting the industry’s wider modernisation ambitions.
ElectroLogIXS is a SIL4-certified signalling system that combines interlocking, object control and level crossing functionality within a modular digital architecture. The technology is designed to manage train movements safely by ensuring points are correctly set, level crossings operate as intended and conflicting train movements are prevented.
Its flexible design enables it to be deployed across a wide range of signalling applications, making it well suited to the evolving needs of the UK railway.
Richard Ward, Head of Sales at Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK, said the agreement strengthens an already successful relationship between the two organisations.
“This framework agreement marks an important step in our relationship with AtkinsRéalis and reflects the confidence both organisations have in the capabilities of ElectroLogIXS,” he said.
“By combining our signalling technology with AtkinsRéalis’ proven delivery expertise, we are well positioned to support future rail infrastructure projects and help drive the continued modernisation of the UK rail network.”
For AtkinsRéalis, the framework supports the continued deployment of its Advanced Signalling Method (ASM), an approach designed to accelerate signalling renewals while reducing disruption to passengers and operators.
Lee Ludlum, Sector Director Lead – Rail Systems at AtkinsRéalis, said: “Upgrading the UK’s rail signalling system depends on the safe and efficient integration of new and existing technologies within a live operational environment.
“This framework with Knorr-Bremse builds on our successful partnership and supports our ability to deploy our Advanced Signalling Method at pace, minimising disruption for passengers and operators while delivering predictable outcomes for clients.”
The agreement builds on existing collaboration between the two companies, including the Havant resignalling project, where ElectroLogIXS technology is currently being deployed as part of the Train Control Systems Framework (TCSF).
For the rail sector, the framework highlights the increasing importance of modular, digital signalling solutions as infrastructure managers seek to improve network performance while managing costs and operational complexity.
The agreement also represents a significant development for KB Signalling, Knorr-Bremse’s specialist signalling business, which focuses on delivering intelligent signalling and control technologies for rail networks around the world.
As the UK rail industry continues its transition towards more digitally enabled operations, partnerships that combine proven technology platforms with established delivery expertise are expected to play a critical role in accelerating network modernisation and improving reliability for both passengers and freight customers.
The new framework provides a long-term platform for both organisations to support future signalling renewals and upgrades, helping to create a safer, more resilient and more efficient railway.
