Knorr-Bremse and VTG Rail UK sign long-term agreement for rollout of FreightControl Sentinel technology

Knorr-Bremse and VTG Rail UK have signed a long-term framework agreement for the exclusive supply of FreightControl Sentinel systems, marking a major step forward in the digitalisation of rail freight operations in the UK. The system is designed to improve safety, availability and operational efficiency across freight wagon fleets.

Under the agreement, Knorr-Bremse will supply at least 2,000 wagon sets of the technology by the end of 2029. The system already forms the digital backbone of VTG’s iWagon platform, a pilot project aimed at reducing wheel defects such as wheel flats and enhancing condition monitoring. The partnership represents one of the most significant advancements in the development of intelligent freight wagons in the UK.

Mario Beinert, Member of the Management Board of Knorr-Bremse Rail Vehicle Systems, said:
“With this pioneering project, Knorr-Bremse and VTG Rail UK are pursuing the goal of sustainably increasing the availability, efficiency, and competitiveness of rail freight transport. With FreightControl Sentinel, Knorr-Bremse is once again positioning itself as a pioneer for modular, scalable digital solutions with tangible customer value. The solution transforms new and existing freight cars into intelligent iWagons with continuous monitoring of safety-related components, thereby optimizing planning, maintenance, and operation of fleets for operators. In addition to the rollout in the UK, we will soon be offering the solutions in other rail markets – starting with Europe.”

Paul Goodhand, Managing Director of Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK, said:
“The contract with VTG is a milestone in our mission to take freight car fleets in the United Kingdom to a new level. In particular, we are setting new standards together with VTG in how technology, data, and connectivity improve safety and operational efficiency in rail freight transport. Preventing wheel flats in particular helps to increase safety and performance on freight rail. The contract is a sign of strong cooperation and demonstrates our joint commitment to the digital future of rail transport.”

The agreement covers technology delivery, installation and integration, as well as the joint development of future system generations and digital dashboards. The order volume for Knorr-Bremse is in the mid double-digit million-euro range.

Developed through close collaboration between VTG Rail UK and Knorr-Bremse, the iWagon combines mechatronic components, modern sensors and advanced data analysis. Powered by axle generators and equipped with wheel slide protection technology, FreightControl Sentinel enables real-time monitoring of wheel and brake condition, reducing the risk of wheel and rail damage, optimising maintenance planning and improving safety.

VTG Rail UK has already received substantial orders for iWagons fitted with FreightControl Sentinel from customers including Heidelberg Materials, Breedon Group, Tarmac and Alvance British Aluminium. Following the UK rollout, Knorr-Bremse intends to introduce the system to European markets with strong demand for digital freight solutions.

FreightControl Sentinel forms a core part of Knorr-Bremse’s wider Digital Freight Train technology programme, which also includes the FreightLink digital automatic coupler and the FreightControl automation system. These technologies enable functions such as automatic coupling, remote uncoupling and automatic brake testing, helping to modernise freight train operations that are still largely manual today.
