Light Rail Safety Body Appoints New Audit and Safety Officer

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) has appointed Peter Hughes to the newly created role of Audit and Safety Officer. Hughes, an experienced safety auditor and accident investigator, brings with him a wealth of knowledge from a career in heavy rail spanning the globe.

A specialist in risk analytics, Hughes has worked in rail safety since 1991, primarily in the UK and Australia, and has also undertaken assignments in India and Malaysia. His expertise includes serving as an expert witness in legal proceedings following fatal accidents and authoring various journal and conference papers.

In his new position at the LRSSB, Hughes will be responsible for initiating safety audits within the light rail sector, maintaining the safety risk management framework, and evaluating compliance with existing standards and regulations. He will also assist in developing and reviewing new light rail standards and support the organisation in implementing effective benchmarking across the sector.

On his appointment, Peter Hughes said: “I’m delighted to join the LRSSB as it further expands the scope of its work, and I’m looking forward to meeting safety professionals from across the sector who share our commitment to further driving down the risk of accidents and other hazardous incidents on UK tramways.”

Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, added: “Peter brings a wealth of experience to this new role, further strengthening the LRSSB’s expert team as we embark on a series of important new projects while building on our success to date.”
