Nomad Digital awarded contract to upgrade Italo high-speed fleet with 5G onboard internet

Nomad Digital has secured a contract to upgrade Italo’s fleet of AGV and EVO Pendolino high-speed trains with its 5G Internet On-Board (IOB) solution.

The contract covers all 51 trains operating across Italy and will enhance passengers’ ability to work, stream and access entertainment through Nomad Digital’s Engage onboard portal. Nomad Digital will also provide ongoing operation and maintenance support, including monitoring, reporting and train intervention services.

The company was selected following a competitive three-month proof-of-concept process, during which participants were assigned an EVO Pendolino train for testing. Solutions were assessed on technical performance, passenger experience and financial criteria.

Deployment of Nomad Digital’s 5G solution began in early 2025, with 31 trains already upgraded. The improvements are significant: download speeds have increased by 460 per cent and web page load times have fallen by 79 per cent. Italo has also recorded higher numbers of connected users and rising customer satisfaction levels.

Emmanuel Henry, Managing Director of Nomad Digital, said:
“The award of this contract is a great success for Nomad Digital and demonstrates our strengthened position in an important region for us. The integration of our 5G solution across the whole Italo fleet and the continued operations and maintenance support reinforces our relationship with Italo. We are proud to be chosen by Italo and to support their pursuit of a customer focused strategy to provide high performance connectivity and an outstanding passenger experience.”

Luca Chiti, Head of new projects for the Operations Division of Italo, said:
“We are delighted to continue our relationship with Nomad Digital. We believe they are best placed to deliver the innovative connectivity technology and knowledge we need to deliver the best possible WiFi related services for our customers. We have already seen a significant improvement as we make progress towards our goal of providing a truly customer focused travel experience.”

Nomad Digital and Italo will speak about the integration of the 5G solution at the BWCS Train Communication Systems 2025: WiFi on Trains Conference.
