Northern announces major recruitment drive for skilled engineers across the North

Northern, the UK’s second-largest train operator, has launched a significant recruitment drive to bolster its engineering team across the North of England. The company is seeking skilled engineers to maintain and enhance its fleet of over 340 trains, ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of millions of passengers every year.

Tricia Williams, managing director at Northern, said: “We are recruiting talented engineers who can help us keep our fleet of trains running smoothly all year round for tens of millions of passengers.

“We are looking for people who can solve problems and carry out maintenance and repairs in a fast-paced environment, while working as part of a team and adhering to strict safety regulations.”

The recruitment drive offers dozens of positions across Northern’s TrainCare Centres in Leeds (Neville Hill), Liverpool (Allerton), and Manchester (Newton Heath). Salaries range from £37,740 (with potential to reach £50,320 upon completion of training) to £49,879 depending on experience and location.

Applicants must be over 18 with a minimum National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Engineering and reside within a 45-minute commute of their desired depot. Northern also welcomes applications from individuals with military engineering experience. The company recognises the valuable skills honed during military service and offers a supportive environment with clear structures, similar to those found in the armed forces.

Northern has a strong commitment to supporting the armed forces. In 2021, the company signed the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating its dedication to employing veterans and recognising their qualifications across its operations.
