Kirklees Council has appointed rail development consultancy SLC to develop the Outline Business Case for a major transformation of the Penistone Line, which links Huddersfield and Sheffield. The planned enhancements aim to improve connectivity, reliability, and frequency for communities across South and West Yorkshire.
The scenic railway line is described as a vital transport link, providing crucial access to jobs, education, and leisure across major towns and smaller stations along its route.
Key Upgrades Under Consideration
The Outline Business Case will explore a series of targeted improvements, including:
- Increasing train speeds along the route.
- Upgrading existing rail infrastructure.
- Doubling sections of the track to allow for two trains per hour in both directions on the northern part of the line.
- Modernising stations to enhance passenger experience and accessibility.
These proposed upgrades are designed to complement the wider improvements being delivered by the Transpennine Route Upgrade, which is focusing on improving journeys between Huddersfield, Manchester, and York.

The development of the Outline Business Case marks the first major step in securing the funding and approvals necessary to realise these transformative upgrades.
