RAIB Releases Annual Report 2024, Highlighting Investigative Activity

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has published its annual report for the period covering 1 January to 31 December 2024, offering a comprehensive overview of its operational and investigative work throughout the year.

During the 2024 operational year, RAIB received 431 notifications of railway incidents. From these, the branch undertook 56 preliminary examinations. Of these initial assessments, 11 escalated into full investigations, while a further 12 resulted in the preparation of safety digests to inform the industry about key findings.

Additionally, eight preliminary examinations led to the initiation of industry reviews, and one case was closed with a letter sent to the Coroner. The report also notes that for 24 preliminary examinations, no further action was deemed necessary.

Over the same period, RAIB published 13 full investigation reports and 10 Safety Digests. The branch also issued an Urgent Safety Advice to the industry and wrote three letters to coroners.
