RSSB announces key updates to Rule Book to enhance rail safety

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has announced significant updates to the Rule Book, which will be implemented in September 2024 and will become effective in December.

These changes are designed to further protect rail workers and passengers and ensure the industry continues to meet evolving safety standards.

The Rule Book, a critical document providing direct instructions for railway staff, will undergo a series of revisions and improvements. These updates will address various areas, including:

  • GSM-R Handbook: Enhancements to the GSM-R Handbook will improve communication and coordination among rail staff.
  • Walking on or near the line: New guidelines will be introduced to clarify procedures for walking on or near the railway line, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Route- and line-proving trains: Updates to the rules governing route- and line-proving trains will ensure the safety and efficiency of these essential operations.
  • New signs and savings: The introduction of new signage and streamlined procedures will improve safety and reduce costs.
  • Audible warnings: Audible warnings will be refined to enhance their effectiveness in alerting staff to potential hazards.

The changes will be incorporated into the September standards update on September 7, 2024, and will become effective in December 2024.

RSSB is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards in the UK rail industry. These updates to the Rule Book are a testament to the organisation’s ongoing efforts to protect rail workers and passengers.
