Transport UK Group (TUK) has launched its comprehensive new company-wide sustainability strategy, marking a significant stride in its mission to shape the future of low-carbon, integrated transport across the UK.
As one of the country’s leading public transport operator owning groups, TUK is firmly committed to delivering greener, more efficient travel through continuous innovation, strategic investment, and long-term planning. The newly unveiled strategy outlines a clear pathway towards achieving net zero emissions, actively supporting local communities and the natural environment, and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Transport UK is already at the forefront of green transport innovation, with notable achievements including the UK’s first battery-operated trains in Liverpool and the operation of one of London’s largest electric bus fleets. This pioneering spirit extends across its Greater Anglia, West Midlands Trains, East Midlands Railway, and Merseyrail networks, as well as managing 11% of London’s bus routes.
To date, Transport UK’s accomplishments include:
- Reducing carbon emissions by 21% between 2020-2024.
- Recycling 65% of waste across its operating businesses.
- Making 337 stations across its network accessibility-friendly.
- Contributing £354 million in social value using the ‘Rail Social Value Tool’.
- Achieving Wildlife Friendly certification by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts for 33 of its stations.
The new strategy builds upon TUK’s 20-year legacy and its established Social Values Charter. It will serve as a guiding framework for how the Group invests in new trains and buses, supports local authorities, and ensures its wider portfolio of businesses – including Solvd., Advanced Ventures, TransportWorks, and its national rail-replacement services – all contribute to a greener future.
Dominic Booth, CEO of Transport UK Group, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are excited to launch our first Sustainability Strategy, building on our Social Values Charter. This is a vital step in creating a low-carbon transport system that meets the needs of passengers and communities. As stewards of some of the best-performing train and bus services in the country, we are proud to support our teams and communities as we advance the green energy revolution with new technologies and sustainable solutions that support a growing economy.”
TUK has also committed to full transparency, pledging to share annual progress reports utilising the Rail Safety and Standards Board’s Sustainability Maturity Tool.
