Warrington Rail Upgrade: Behind-the-Scenes Footage Released After Bank Holiday Blitz

Impressive footage has been released offering a glimpse behind the scenes of significant railway renewal works undertaken in Warrington over the recent early May bank holiday weekend.

Rail bosses have expressed their gratitude to passengers for their understanding following the closure of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Preston, which was necessary to facilitate the crucial engineering work.

The project saw the complete removal and replacement of two sets of switches and crossings – vital components of the railway that enable trains to switch between different tracks – at Dallam Junction, situated on the West Coast Main Line just north of Warrington Bank Quay station.

Remarkably, the previous track components had been in continuous service since 1986, nearing four decades of operation. The newly installed, upgraded track is expected to deliver more dependable and smoother journeys for both passengers and freight services in the years ahead.

Network Rail, collaborating with the Central Rail Systems Alliance*, spearheaded the essential improvements. Today (Tuesday, 6th of May), compelling video footage showcasing the scale and swift progress of the project has been made public, coinciding with the full resumption of train services at the junction, operating at the normal line speed of 90mph.

Brian Paynter, Network Rail Capital Delivery track programme director, commented: “Hundreds of dedicated railway engineers worked around the clock on this multi-million-pound renewal this early May bank holiday. We have no choice but to close the railway for work at this scale, as we are ripping out old track and installing it anew.”

He added: “This has seen some journeys taking longer and involving diversions or replacement buses, so I’d like to thank those whose journeys were affected over the weekend. Our progress sets us up nicely for when we return to complete the rest of the railway junction’s essential overhaul during the late May bank holiday.”
