Colin Kerr appointed Chair of new Light Rail Standards Committee

A new committee tasked with shaping formal standards across the UK light rail sector has appointed Colin Kerr as its Chair.

Kerr, a well-known figure in tramway safety, brings extensive industry experience to the role, having previously served as Head of Safety and Projects at Edinburgh Trams. He currently works as a Technical Engineer and non-executive director at the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB).

The newly formed Light Rail Standards Committee will play a central role in developing a consistent, sector-wide approach to standards, supporting ambitions for the UK to strengthen its position as a leader in tramway design and operation.

Driving consistency across the sector

The committee will draw on expertise from across the industry to review existing standards and identify priorities for future development. Its scope will cover a broad range of areas, including infrastructure design, operational practices and employee wellbeing policies.

It will also look ahead to emerging challenges and opportunities, particularly as new technologies such as artificial intelligence begin to shape the future of light rail systems.

Colin Kerr said:

“I’m also looking forward to working collaboratively with fellow committee members, industry partners, and stakeholders to strengthen standards, encourage good practices, and support sustainable and forward-thinking solutions to the challenges faced by the sector.

“Together, we will continue to uphold the highest levels of technical integrity and public responsibility, and I’m eager to contribute my experience and leadership to furthering our shared objectives while ensuring that our standards reflect both current industry needs and future advancements.”

Supporting a growing light rail sector

The creation of the committee reflects a broader push within the sector to formalise standards and improve consistency, particularly as light rail networks expand and evolve.

By bringing together industry expertise under a single framework, the committee aims to support safer, more efficient and more innovative tramway systems, while ensuring standards remain aligned with both current operational needs and future developments.
