Lumo unveils new-look Class 222 trains ahead of West Coast launch

Lumo has revealed the first images of its refurbished Class 222 trains, showcasing a bold new livery as the operator prepares to launch its West Coast service later this Spring.

The fleet, currently undergoing refurbishment at Alstom’s Widnes modernisation facility in partnership with Beacon Rail, features Lumo’s signature blue branding alongside upgraded interiors designed to enhance passenger comfort.

Refreshed fleet for a new route

The trains will form the backbone of Lumo’s new open access service linking Scotland, the North West and London, offering a lower-cost alternative on one of the UK’s busiest intercity corridors.

Internally, the refurbishment includes upgraded seating, with some coaches fitted with new grey and silver seats, alongside improvements aimed at delivering a more modern and consistent onboard experience.

The first images were unveiled at the official opening of Lumo’s new base in Preston, attended by around 50 invited guests.

Investment in Preston and local partnerships

The new Preston facility will create around 100 jobs, positioning the city as a key operational hub for the service.

The launch event combined rail investment with local engagement, featuring a procession in partnership with the Preston Caribbean Carnival and a live performance from Scottish group Just The Brave.

Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, said:

“This is a significant moment for both Lumo colleagues and the people of Preston as we countdown to officially launching our new West Coast service.

“We’re excited to be investing in our new base in Preston which is creating jobs and supporting the local economy. We’re looking forward to becoming a part of the community here, already forging some brilliant partnerships, with the Preston Caribbean Carnival team helping us to open our HQ here in real style.

“We can’t wait to begin this new service in the coming months, offering simple, low-cost tickets and direct services between Scotland, the North West of England and London.”

Industry collaboration behind the upgrade

The refurbishment programme highlights continued collaboration between operator, manufacturer and asset owner, bringing existing rolling stock back into service with improved performance and passenger experience.

Steve Harvey, Services Director UK and Ireland at Alstom, said:

“We’re delighted to give passengers a sneak peek of our refurbished Class 222 trains. This project is a fantastic example of industry collaboration, and our teams have worked proudly alongside Lumo and Beacon Rail to deliver a refreshed, high quality fleet that enhances comfort and reliability for travellers.

“As Lumo prepares to launch its new West Coast service, we’re thrilled that Alstom’s expertise is helping bring these trains back into service in a vibrant new livery, supporting both regional jobs and the wider rail network.”

Adam Cunliffe, Beacon Chief Executive Officer, added:

“Congratulations to Lumo on the opening of their new offices in Preston. Beacon is delighted to be working in partnership with Lumo and Alstom to upgrade the C222s and we look forward to seeing the newly refurbished trains commence passenger services.”

A competitive offer on a key corridor

Tickets for the new service are already on sale, starting from £29.90 between London Euston and Stirling, with stops including Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle and Motherwell.

Lumo’s entry onto the West Coast Main Line introduces further competition on the route, with a focus on simple fares, direct services and high customer satisfaction—areas where the operator has already built a strong reputation on the East Coast.

As the launch approaches, the combination of refurbished rolling stock, new infrastructure in Preston and a clear pricing strategy positions Lumo to make an immediate impact on one of the UK’s most strategically important rail corridors.
