HS2 launches Innovation Accelerator to drive future rail maintenance

HS2 Ltd has announced the cohort participating in its seventh Innovation Accelerator program, focused on developing cutting-edge railway technologies to enhance the reliability and efficiency of future train operations.

As the focus of HS2 delivery shifts towards rail systems installation, the Innovation Accelerator program is strategically seeking innovative solutions from external sources to address key challenges, including:

  • Automating asset management: Leveraging AI and data analytics to predict and prevent maintenance issues.
  • Maximising site productivity: Implementing robotics and automation to improve efficiency and safety during construction and maintenance.
  • Future-proofing operations: Developing resilient and adaptable solutions to address the evolving needs of a modern, high-speed rail network.

In partnership with Connected Places Catapult and the Department for Transport, HS2 Ltd has selected six promising UK-based SMEs to participate in the 20-week program. These companies will collaborate with HS2 and its partners to refine their innovative concepts and demonstrate their potential to transform rail operations.

HS2 Ltd’s senior innovation manager, Jon Kelly said: “This new Accelerator programme, with its rail systems operations and maintenance focus, underlines how HS2’s delivery is progressing as we’re now looking for innovations in how the railway operates and is maintained.

“As with the previous six Innovation Accelerators, products and solutions successfully developed under this new scheme to drive efficiencies and smarter working can streamline delivery of HS2 as well as future rail investment and construction programmes.”

Connected Places Catapult’s Ecosystem Director for Rail and Stations, Dr Alan Peters said: “I’m delighted to see the innovative solutions coming forward through the HS2 Accelerator. This programme is supporting small businesses to develop solutions that will enhance asset management, safeguard critical systems, and boost on-site efficiency. These advancements are vital for ensuring safer, more efficient operations that can meet the demands of tomorrow’s rail network.”

Participating SMEs and their innovative solutions include:

  • Archangel Imaging: Utilizing AI-powered security cameras to enhance security across the extensive HS2 estate.
  • Complete Cyber: Developing advanced cybersecurity solutions to protect the digital signaling systems that will operate HS2.
  • Machines for Construction: Employing robotic technology to automate repetitive tasks such as overhead line installation, improving efficiency and reducing risks.
  • Mind Foundry: Leveraging AI to predict and prevent infrastructure failures, enabling proactive maintenance and enhancing overall network reliability.
  • PRAM: Utilizing advanced radar technology to monitor the condition of critical infrastructure, such as viaducts and embankments, ensuring their long-term integrity.
  • StirlingX: Deploying uncrewed aerial systems for efficient inspection and monitoring of infrastructure assets, identifying potential risks and hazards.

Upon completion of the Accelerator program, the participating SMEs will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative solutions to industry investors and the broader HS2 supply chain, fostering potential collaborations and business growth.

Since its inception in 2020, the HS2 Innovation Accelerator has supported 37 SMEs, resulting in 29 pilot projects across the HS2 program. These companies have collectively raised over £220 million in funding and created over 430 new jobs in the UK.
