Network Rail Consulting (NRC) has been awarded a three-year contract worth $26 million by the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) to strengthen asset management and maintenance across Seattle’s expanding Link light rail network.
The contract will see NRC support the development of asset management capability and maintenance practices designed to improve the reliability, performance and long-term sustainability of the growing network.
Supporting network expansion
As Link light rail continues to expand across the Seattle metropolitan area, Sound Transit is seeking to enhance the way it manages and maintains its infrastructure to support increasing passenger demand and future growth.
Under the contract, NRC will provide specialist expertise across a broad range of rail systems, including track and signalling, traction power and overhead catenary equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), light rail vehicles, telecommunications and station building systems, including fire detection, suppression and emergency ventilation.
Strengthening asset management
The programme will see NRC work with Sound Transit to develop and implement asset management and maintenance strategies, while supporting the integration of an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system.
The consultancy will also help establish competence management frameworks for safety-critical activities, deliver training programmes, improve reliability management to reduce service disruption, and develop quality assurance and verification processes to strengthen operational performance.

Drawing on experience delivering asset management programmes across the UK and internationally, NRC has increasingly supported rail operators seeking to improve infrastructure reliability, optimise maintenance regimes and enhance long-term operational performance.
The latest contract reflects the growing recognition of asset management as a critical component in ensuring expanding urban rail networks remain reliable, resilient and cost-effective throughout their lifecycle.
