Welfare on the frontline has long been an undiscussed topic in rail. As the infrastructure changes and responsibilities become fragmented, there has been many organisations highlighting a reduction in the provision of facilities for staff.
Alongside this, surveys by RSSB have found as much as 40% of rail workers are suffering from a mental health condition – and only half of those sought help. Some of those cited social exclusion and/or burnout as a contributory factor. While working in such a safety critical environment, the need for welfare support is significant.
