Bender UK has introduced a portable version of its proven RS4 Tier 1 rail signalling protection system, giving engineers a flexible way to monitor insulation performance across signalling power networks without the need for permanent installation.
The new Portable RS4 Tier 1 has been designed to support temporary fault investigations, planned engineering works and condition monitoring, enabling rail teams to deploy advanced insulation monitoring wherever it is required across the network.
Building on the technology already used in fixed RS4 Tier 1 installations across the UK railway, the portable system provides comprehensive insulation monitoring and resistance measurement while offering greater flexibility for engineers responding to faults or carrying out maintenance.
Housed in a rugged IP65-rated Peli case, the unit is designed for use in demanding rail environments and offers up to 12 hours of battery operation, allowing monitoring to be undertaken without requiring a permanent power connection.
The system helps engineers identify whether insulation faults are located upstream or downstream within signalling power systems, narrowing the search area and reducing the time required to locate faults. By enabling quicker diagnosis, the technology has the potential to reduce trackside working time, minimise operational disruption and lower maintenance costs.
Remote access is available through the company’s Bender Connect cloud platform, providing engineers with live visibility of insulation performance and allowing monitoring data to be accessed away from site.
For applications requiring longer-term monitoring, the Portable RS4 Tier 1 can also be configured to operate from a mains power supply. This enables engineers to monitor intermittent faults, including those influenced by environmental conditions, and identify gradual insulation degradation before it develops into equipment failure.
The new system has received PADS approval (0054/213796) and complements Bender UK’s established portfolio of Tier 1 monitoring solutions, which are already deployed at hundreds of locations across the UK rail network.
The launch reflects the growing use of condition monitoring and digital diagnostics across the railway as infrastructure managers and contractors seek to improve reliability through earlier fault detection and more targeted maintenance interventions.
By providing advanced monitoring in a portable format, Bender UK aims to give rail engineers greater flexibility when responding to faults while supporting more efficient maintenance and reducing disruption to signalling systems.
