Northern named UK’s highest-ranked train operator in Sunday Times apprenticeship league table

Northern has been recognised as the UK’s leading train operator for apprenticeships after securing 24th place in the Sunday Times Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list.

The ranking marks the operator’s debut appearance in the prestigious annual league table and matches the highest position ever achieved by a train operating company.

Compiled by the Sunday Times, the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers recognises organisations that demonstrate excellence in developing apprenticeship programmes, assessing employers on the quality, scale and impact of their schemes.

Northern’s position places it ahead of every other rail operator featured in this year’s rankings and among the UK’s leading apprenticeship employers across all sectors.

The recognition reflects the operator’s continued investment in developing future rail talent across the North of England, where it currently supports more than 800 apprentices across a wide range of operational, engineering and business disciplines.

Tricia Williams, Managing Director of Northern, said the achievement highlighted the importance of apprenticeships in building the railway’s future workforce.

“We are incredibly proud to have matched the highest ever ranking for a train operating company in the Sunday Times Top 100, and to have done it on our very first entry makes this even more special,” she said.

“This result reflects the dedication of our apprentices and the teams who support them every step of the way. Apprenticeships are one of the most powerful routes into our industry, and this recognition reinforces our commitment to opening those doors to as many people as possible.”

Apprenticeships are playing an increasingly important role across the rail sector as employers seek to address long-term skills shortages, replace an ageing workforce and attract a more diverse generation of talent into the industry.

Northern’s apprenticeship programme forms a central part of its wider workforce strategy, providing opportunities across engineering, train operations, customer service, infrastructure and corporate functions.

The operator currently runs around 2,650 services every day, serving more than 500 stations across the North of England, making it the UK’s second-largest train operator by service volume.

The Sunday Times recognition comes as the rail industry continues to place greater emphasis on developing skills pipelines through apprenticeships and vocational training, ensuring the workforce is equipped to support future investment, modernisation and the transition towards Great British Railways.

By achieving the highest ranking among train operators, Northern has reinforced the growing importance of apprenticeships in securing the next generation of railway professionals while demonstrating the value of sustained investment in early careers development.
