The next phase of South Yorkshire’s £110 million Supertram renewal programme will take place this weekend, with engineers carrying out essential track replacement works to improve the long-term reliability of the network.
The latest upgrades, scheduled for Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June, will focus on replacing worn sections of rail in the Waterthorpe area as part of a wider investment programme modernising Sheffield’s tram system.
The track renewal forms part of a comprehensive £110 million investment programme that is upgrading key elements of the network, including tram vehicles, track infrastructure, control systems and power supplies. The programme also includes the recently completed Tram Train station at Magna.
The Waterthorpe works represent the fourth phase of infrastructure upgrades delivered this year, following successful engineering programmes undertaken over the Easter period and the May bank holidays.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) says scheduling the works over a weekend will help minimise disruption while allowing engineers to complete the essential maintenance safely and efficiently.
Melanie Corcoran, SYMCA’s Executive Director of Transport, said: “By scheduling the works over the weekend, when the tram network is quieter, we aim to keep disruption to passengers and road users to a minimum.
“The rail replacement works at Waterthorpe are the fourth phase of upgrades this year, following successful work completed over Easter and the Bank Holidays in May.
“Our ongoing multi-million-pound investment in Supertram is essential to extending the life of the network, making sure this busy service remains safe and reliable for the millions of passengers who use it every year.”
The investment programme is designed to extend the operational life of the Supertram network while improving reliability and supporting future passenger demand across South Yorkshire.
