InnoTrans to host international AI hackathon backed by major rail firms

InnoTrans 2026 will introduce a new international AI hackathon as part of its innovation programme, bringing together developers, startups and industry leaders to tackle real-world challenges in transport.

The event, titled “AI on Track”, will take place from 23 to 25 September 2026 at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, running alongside the world’s largest rail and transport technology trade fair. Around 60 to 80 participants from across the globe are expected to take part.

Alstom, Siemens Mobility and Wabtec have been confirmed as main sponsors, each contributing practical industry challenges for participants to address using digital tools and artificial intelligence.

The hackathon is designed to focus on applied solutions, with themes expected to include areas such as operational efficiency, passenger experience, energy management and data-driven decision making.

Henri Badaro, Vice President Data and AI at Alstom, said the initiative reflects the growing importance of turning data into actionable insight.

“Rail generates data at scale, but value comes from how that data is used to improve performance,” he said. “This hackathon brings together fresh thinking and operational expertise to accelerate practical, data-driven solutions.”

Siemens Mobility also highlighted the role of AI in addressing increasing demands on transport systems.

Devina Pasta, CEO of Siemens Mobility Software, said: “Operators are under pressure to deliver more capacity, reliability and better passenger experience while managing costs. AI will be central to meeting those challenges, from disruption management to planning and revenue optimisation.”

Wabtec’s contribution will focus on developing efficient and ethically sound AI solutions, including areas such as data protection and energy-efficient systems.

The hackathon will begin one day after the official opening of InnoTrans and will conclude with an awards ceremony on 25 September. A jury of industry experts will select the winning teams, with prize money of up to €5,000 available.

Participants will also benefit from extended access to the exhibition site, with special arrangements allowing teams to work into the evening across both development days.

Kerstin Schulz, Director of InnoTrans, said the new format strengthens the event’s role as a platform for innovation.

“The hackathon reflects the increasing relevance of artificial intelligence across the sector,” she said. “It creates a space where industry, startups and emerging talent can collaborate and develop ideas that respond to real challenges.”

InnoTrans 2024 attracted nearly 3,000 exhibitors and around 170,000 visitors, underlining the scale of the event and the platform it offers for new ideas to gain visibility.
